فَلَمَّا قَضَيْنا عَلَيْهِ الْمَوْتَ ما دَلَّهُمْ عَلى مَوْتِهِ إِلاَّ دَابَّةُ الأَْرْضِ تَأْكُلُ مِنْسَأَتَهُ فَلَمَّا خَرَّ تَبَيَّنَتِ الْجِنُّ أَنْ لَوْ كانُوا يَعْلَمُونَ الْغَيْبَ ما لَبِثُوا فِي الْعَذابِ الْمُهِينِ

فلمّا قضينا عليه الموت ما دلّهم على موته إلاّ دابّة الأرض تأكل منسأته فلمّا خرّ تبيّنت الجنّ أن لو كانوا يعلمون الغيب ما لبثوا في العذاب المهين

Falamma qadayna AAalayhi almawta ma dallahum AAala mawtihi illa dabbatu al-ardi ta/kulu minsaatahu falamma kharra tabayyanati aljinnu an law kanoo yaAAlamoona alghayba ma labithoo fee alAAathabi almuheeni

چون حکم مرگ را بر او رانديم حشره اي از حشرات زمين مردم را بر مرگش آگاه کرد : عصايش را جويد چون فرو افتاد ، ديوها دريافتند که اگر علم غيب مي دانستند ، در آن عذاب خوارکننده نمي ماندند

و چون مرگ او را مقرر داشتيم، چيزى جز كرم چوب خواره، مرگ او را به آنان نشان نداد، كه عصايش را خورد پس چون [جسدش] در افتاد، جنيان پى بردند كه اگر غيب مى دانستند، در آن رنج و عذاب خفت بار نمى ماندند.

و چون مرگ را بر سليمان مقرر نموديم، چيزى باعث آشكار شدن مرگ او نشد مگر جانور زمينى كه عصاى او را از داخل ميخورد. همين كه سليمان افتاد، مرگ او آشكار شد و اگر جنيان قبلا ميدانستند، تحت اعمال شاقه نمى‏ماندند.

پس هنگامی که مرگ را بر او مقرّر کردیم، جنیان را از مرگش جز موریانه ای که عصایش را می خورد، آگاه نکرد؛ زمانی که به روی زمین در افتاد، جنّیان [که ادعای علم غیب داشتند] فهمیدند که اگر غیب می دانستند در آن عذاب خوارکننده [که کارهای بسیار پرزحمت و طاقت فرسا بود] درنگ نمی کردند.

پس آندم كه گذرانديم بر سليمان مرگ را رهبرى نكرد پريان را بر مرگ وى مگر جنبنده زمين (موريانه چوب خوار) كه مى‏خورد عصاى سليمان را پس آن هنگام كه سليمان بروى در افتاد دانستند پريان كه اگر بودند مى‏دانستند غيب را درنگ نمى‏كردند در عذاب خوار كننده

پس چون مرگ را بر او مقرر داشتيم، جز جنبنده‏اى خاكى [=موريانه‏] كه عصاى او را [به تدريج‏] مى‏خورد، [آدميان را] از مرگ او آگاه نگردانيد، پس چون [سليمان‏] فرو افتاد براى جنيان روشن گرديد كه اگر غيب مى‏دانستند، در آن عذاب خفت‏آور [باقى‏] نمى‏ماندند.

چون مرگ را بر او مقرر داشتيم مردمان را از مرگش آگاهى نداد مگر جنبنده‏اى از زمين كه عصاى او را جويد، چون فرو افتاد ديوها دريافتند كه اگر از غيب آگاه بودند در آن عذاب خوار كننده گرفتار نمى‏شدند.

و آن گاه كه به مرگ او فرمان داديم، [كسى‏] بر مرگ او راهنمون نشد مگر يك جانور زمينى كه عصاى او را مى‏خورد و چون سليمان فرو افتاد، آشكار گشت كه اگر ديوان غيب مى‏دانستند، در [آن‏] عذاب خوار كننده نمى‏ماندند.

پس چون گذرانديم بر او مرگ را دلالت نكرد ايشانرا بر مرگش مگر جنبنده زمين كه مى‏خورد عصايش را پس چون برو درافتاد ظاهر شد جن را كه اگر بودند كه ميدانستند غيب را نمى‏ماندند در عذاب خوار كننده

پس چون مرگ را بر او مقرر داشتيم جز كرم چوب خوار كه عصايش را مى‏خورد آنان را به مرگ او راه ننمود. پس چون افتاد، جنّ‏ها دريافتند كه اگر غيب مى‏دانستند در [اين‏] عذاب خوار كننده نمى‏ماندند

(با این همه جلال و شکوه سلیمان) هنگامی که مرگ را بر او مقرّر داشتیم، کسی آنها را از مرگ وی آگاه نساخت مگر جنبنده زمین [= موریانه‌] که عصای او را می‌خورد (تا شکست و پیکر سلیمان فرو افتاد)؛ هنگامی که بر زمین افتاد جنّیان فهمیدند که اگر از غیب آگاه بودند در عذاب خوارکننده باقی نمی‌ماندند!

پس چون فرمان مرگ را بر او رانديم، آنان را بر مرگ او رهنمونى نكرد مگر جنبنده زمين- كرم چوب‏خوار موريانه- كه عصايش را مى‏خورد، پس چون [سليمان‏] بيفتاد ديوان دريافتند كه اگر غيب مى‏دانستند- از مرگ سليمان آگاهى داشتند- در آن عذاب خواركننده درنگ نمى‏كردند.

پس چون گذرانديم بر او مرگ را دلالت نكرد ايشان را بر مرگش مگر جنبنده زمين كه مى‏خورد عصايش را پس چون برو در افتاد ظاهر شد جن را كه اگر بودند كه ميدانستند غيب را نمى‏ماندند در عذاب خوار كننده

پس هنگامى كه گذرانديم بر او مرگ را رهبريشان نكرد بر مرگش جز جنبنده زمين كه مى خورد چوبدستش را تا گاهى كه به روى در افتاد دريافتند پريان كه اگر مى دانستند ناپيدا را نمى ماندند در عذابى خواركننده

و چون ما بر سلیمان مرگ را مأمور ساختیم (دیوان را) بر مرگ او به جز حیوان زمین (موریانه) که عصای او را می‌خورد (و جسد سلیمان که تا یک سال بر آن عصا تکیه داشت بر روی زمین افتاد) کسی دیگر به مرگ او رهبر نگشت. پس چون جسد سلیمان به زمین افتاد دیوان که از مرگ سلیمان آگاه شدند اگر از اسرار غیب آگاه بودند تا دیر زمانی در عذاب و ذلّت و خواری باقی نمی‌ماندند (و از اعمال شاقّه‌ای که به اجبار انجام می‌دادند همان دم که سلیمان مرد دست می‌کشیدند).

هنگامي كه زمان مرگ او فرا رسيد، آنها به هيچ وجه نفهميدند كه او مرده بود. تا اينكه يكي از جانواران سعي كرد چوب دست او را بخورد و او نقش بر زمين شد، درآن هنگام جن ها متوجه شدند كه او مرده بود. بدين ترتيب، آنها فهميدند كه اگر واقعاً از غيب خبر داشتند، پس از مرگ او به آن سختي كار نمي كردند.

So when We ordered/accomplished on him the death/lifelessness, nothing guided/lead them on (to) his death/lifelessness except the land’s/Earth’s walker/creeper/crawler , eating his shepherd’s staff/stick, so when he fell down the Jinns clarified/explained (to themselves) that (E) if they were knowing the absent/covered , they would not have stayed/remained/waited in the torture the disgracing/degrading.

Then when We decreed death for him (Sulaiman (Solomon)), nothing informed them (jinns) of his death except a little worm of the earth, which kept (slowly) gnawing away at his stick, so when he fell down, the jinns saw clearly that if they had known the unseen, they would not have stayed in the humiliating torment.

And when We decreed that he should die, naught indicated to them that he was dead but the Beast of the Earth devouring his staff; and when he fell down, the jinn saw clearly that, had they only known the Unseen, they would not have continued in the humbling chastisement.

Yet [even Solomon had to die; but] when We decreed that he should die, nothing showed them that he was dead except an earthworm that gnawed away his staff. [This is yet another of the many Solomonic legends which had become an inalienable part of ancient Arabian tradition, and which the Quran uses as a vehicle for the allegorical illustration of some of its teachings. According to the legend alluded to above, Solomon died on his throne leaning forward on his staff, and for a length of time nobody became aware of his death: with the result that the jinn, who had been constrained to work for him, went on labouring at the heavy tasks assigned to them. Gradually, however, a termite ate away Solomon’s staff, and his body, deprived of support, fell to the ground. This story – only hinted at in its outline – is apparently used here as an allegory of the insignificance and inherent brittleness of human life and of the perishable nature and emptiness of all worldly might and glory.] And when he fell to the ground, those invisible beings [subservient to him] saw clearly that, had they but understood the reality which was beyond the reach of their perception, [Al-ghayb, «that which is beyond the reach of [a created being’s] perception», either in an absolute or – as in this instance – in a relative, temporary sense.] they would not have continued [to toil] in the shameful suffering [of servitude] [I.e., because they would have known that Solomon’s sway over them had ended. In the elliptic manner so characteristic of the Quran, stress is laid here, firstly, on the limited nature of all empirical knowledge, including the result of deductions and inferences based on no more than observable or calculable phenomena, and, secondly, on the impossibility to determine correctly, on the basis of such limited fragments of knowledge alone, what course of action would be right in a given situation. Although the story as such relates to «invisible beings», its moral lesson (which may be summed up in the statement that empirical knowledge cannot provide any ethical guideline unless it is accompanied, and completed, by divine guidance) is obviously addressed to human beings as well.]

Toen wij hadden besloten, dat Salomo zou sterven, ontdekte hun niets zijnen dood, behalve het kruipend gedierte der aarde, dat zijn staf doorknaagde. En toen zijn lijk nederviel, begrepen de geniussen volkomen, dat, indien zij hadden geweten wat geheim is, zij niet zoolang in die vernederende straf waren gebleven.

Then, when We decreed death for him, nothing informed them of his death until a worm kept eating from his staff, so when he fell down, the Jinn realised that if they had known the unseen, they would not have remained in the humiliating retribution.

Quando poi decidemmo che morisse, fu solo la «bestia della terra» che li avvertì della sua morte, rosicchiando il suo bastone. Poi, quando cadde, ebbero la prova i dèmoni che se avessero conosciuto l’invisibile, non sarebbero rimasti nel castigo avvilente.

Then when We decreed death for him (Sulaiman (Solomon)), nothing informed them (jinns) of his death except a little worm of the earth, which kept (slowly) gnawing away at his stick, so when he fell down, the jinns saw clearly that if they had known the unseen, they would not have stayed in the humiliating torment.

But when We decreed death for him, naught showed them his death but a creature of the earth that ate away his staff; and when it fell down, the jinn came to know plainly that if they had known the unseen, they would not have tarried in abasing torment.

And when We decreed death for him, nothing showed his death to them save a creeping creature of the earth which gnawed away his staff. And when he fell the jinn saw clearly how, if they had known the Unseen, they would not have continued in despised toil.

And when we decreed for him death, naught guided them to his death save a reptile of the earth that ate his staff; and when he fell down it was made manifest to the ginns that, had they but known the unseen, they need not have tarried in the shameful torment.

Sonunda, Süleyman için ölüm hükmünü verdiğimizde, onun ölümünü, değneğini yiyen dâbbetül arzdan/ağaç kurtçuğundan başkası onlara göstermedi. Süleyman yere yığılınca, açıkça anlaşıldı ki, eğer cinler gaybı bilmiş olsalardı, o alçaltıcı azap içinde bekleyip durmazlardı.

And when We decreed (Solomon’s) death, they had no indication that he was dead until (they saw a termite), a crawler of the earth eating away his staff. And when he fell down, the jinn realized that had they known the unseen, they would not have continued in their humiliating punishment.

When We decreed death for him (Solomon), nothing showed his death to the Wild Tribes until a creature of the earth ate away the strength he had mustered. When the power base fell, the Wild Tribes rebelled regretting that they should have done it sooner only if they knew the new unjust King. (The ‹creature of the earth› was the highly incompetent son Rehoboam, and successor of Solomon 38:34. Historically, ten of the Israelite Tribes also broke away from the Kingdom at that point).

When the appointed time for his death came, they had no clue that he had died. Not until one of the animals tried to eat his staff, and he fell down, did the jinns realized that he was dead. They thus realized that if they really knew the unseen, they would have stopped working so hard as soon as he died.

And when we decreed the death of Solomon, nothing shewed them that he was dead but a reptile of the earth that gnawed the staff which supported his corpse. And when it fell, the Djinn perceived that if they had known the things unseen, they had not continued in this shameful affliction.

And when We had decreed that Solomon should die, nothing discovered his death unto them, except the creeping thing of the earth, which gnawed his staff. And when his body fell down, the genii plainly perceived that if they had known that which is secret, they had not continued in a vile punishment.

And when WE decreed his (Solomon’s) death, nothing indicated to them that he was dead save a worm of the earth that ate away his staff. So when it fell down, the jinn plainly realized that if they had known the unseen, they would not have remained in a state of degrading torment.

Und als Wir seinen (Salomos) Tod herbeigeführt hatten, da zeigte ihnen nichts seinen Tod an als ein Wurm der Erde, der sein Zepter zerfraß; also gewahrten die Dschinn deutlich, wie er fiel, daß sie, hätten sie das Verborgene gekannt, nicht in schmählicher Pein hätten bleiben müssen.

Когда же Мы на смерть его определили, ■ Лишь червь земной им указал на смерть его, ■ Подъев тот посох, (на который опирался его труп); ■ Когда упал он, джинны осознали, ■ Что, если б удалось им тайное познать, ■ Им не пришлось бы выполнять (так долго) ■ (Работу), что была им унизительною карой.

Сөләйманның Без билгеләгән гомере беткәч, мөнбәрдә басып торганы хәлдә җанын алдык, аның үлгәнен Аллаһ җеннәргә дә, кешеләргә дә белдермәде, мәгәр үлгән хәлдә таянып торган таягын кортлар ашап өзгәч, ул җиргә егылды, шул вакытта аның үлгәнен кешеләр дә, җеннәр дә белделәр әгәр җеннәр яшерен нәрсәне белә торган булсалар, әлбәттә, Сөләйманның үлгәнен белер иделәр, һәм аның үлгәнен белгән булсалар, әлбәттә, авыр эштә бер ел буена кыналып эшләп ятмаслар иде. Чөнки Сөләйман үлгәч таягына таянып бер ел торды, җеннәр безгә карап тора дип һаман эшләделәр, егылгач кына котылдык, дип, качтылар.

پھر جب ہم نے ان کے لئے موت کا حکم صادر کیا تو کسی چیز سے ان کا مرنا معلوم نہ ہوا مگر گھن کے کیڑے سے جو ان کے عصا کو کھاتا رہا۔ جب عصا گر پڑا تب جنوں کو معلوم ہوا (اور کہنے لگے) کہ اگر وہ غیب جانتے ہوتے تو ذلت کی تکلیف میں نہ رہتے

پھر جب ہم نے سلیمان (علیہ السلام) پر موت کا حکم صادر فرما دیا تو اُن (جنّات) کو ان کی موت پر کسی نے آگاہی نہ کی سوائے زمین کی دیمک کے جو اُن کے عصا کو کھاتی رہی، پھر جب آپ کا جسم زمین پر آگیا تو جنّات پر ظاہر ہوگیا کہ اگر وہ غیب جانتے ہوتے تو اس ذلّت انگیز عذاب میں نہ پڑے رہتے،
