وَ كَمْ أَهْلَكْنا قَبْلَهُمْ مِنْ قَرْنٍ هُمْ أَشَدُّ مِنْهُمْ بَطْشاً فَنَقَّبُوا فِي الْبِلادِ هَلْ مِنْ مَحِيصٍ

و كم أهلكنا قبلهم من قرن هم أشدّ منهم بطشا فنقّبوا في البلاد هل من محيص

Wakam ahlakna qablahum min qarnin hum ashaddu minhum batshan fanaqqaboo fee albiladi hal min maheesin

پيش از آنها چه مردمي را که نيرومندتر بودند و در شهرها سير و جست و جو، مي کردند ، به هلاکت آورده ايم آيا راه گريزي هست ؟

و چه بسيار پيش از آنان نسلهايى را نابود كرديم كه آنان از ايشان درازدست تر بودند; كه در گوشه و كنار شهرها جستوجو كردند كه آيا گريزگاهى هست.

چه بسا طوايف پيش از اينان را هلاك كرديم كه نيرومندتر از ايشان (اهل مكه) بودند و در شهرهاى بزرگ زندگى مى‏كردند آيا با تمام نيرومنديشان راه گريزى از مرگ داشتند؟

و چه بسیار اقوامی را که پیش از آنان هلاک کردیم که از آنان نیرومندتر بودند، و [با نیرویشان] به سرزمین ها رفتند [و آنها را فتح کردند] ، آیا توانستند [از عذاب و هلاکت] گریزگاهی بیابند؟

چه بسا نابود كرديم پيش از كفار مكه شهرها را كه آن نابود شدگان سختتر بودند از ايشان از نظر نيرو پس راه‏ها گشودند در شهرها آيا (ايشان را از مرگ) هيچ گريزگاهى بود بيگمان

و چه بسا نسلها كه پيش از ايشان هلاك كرديم كه [بس‏] نيرومندتر از اينان بودند و در شهرها پرسه زده بودند [اما سرانجام‏] مگر گريزگاهى بود؟

چه بسيار اقوامى كه قبل از آنها هلاكشان كرديم- اقوامى كه از آنها نيرومندتر بودند و در شهرها سير كردند، مگر راه نجاتى وجود دارد؟

و چه بسيار گروه‏هايى كه پيش از ايشان هلاك كرديم آنها از اينان به نيرو سخت‏تر بودند، و سرزمين‏ها گشودند، [ولى‏] آيا از [مرگ‏] گريزى داشتند؟

و بسا هلاك كرديم پيش از ايشان از قرنى كه آنها سخت تر بودند از ايشان در قوت پس راه انداختند در بلدها آيا، هيچ بود گريزگاهى

و چه بسيار امّتها را كه آنان از اينان سختگيرتر بودند، پيش از اينان نابود كرديم، كه در شهرها به جستجو پرداختند كه آيا هيچ گريزگاهى هست؟

چه بسیار اقوامی را که پیش از آنها هلاک کردیم، اقوامی که از آنان قویتر بودند و شهرها (و کشورها) را گشودند؛ آیا راه فراری (از عذاب الهی) وجود دارد!

و چه بسيار مردمانى را پيش از آنها نابود كرديم كه از اينها- اين كافران- زورمندتر بودند، پس در شهرها گردش و كاوش كردند آيا [آنان را] هيچ پناه و گريزگاهى هست- از عذاب و هلاك و مرگ؟

و بسا هلاك كرديم پيش از ايشان از قرنى كه آنها سخت‏تر بودند از ايشان در قوت پس راه انداختند در بلدها آيا هيچ بود گريزگاهى

و بسا نابود ساختيم پيش از ايشان قرنى كه بودند سخت تر از ايشان در نيرو پس كاويدند در شهرها آيا هست گريزگاهى

و چقدر طوایفی را پیش از اینان ما هلاک کردیم که با قهر و قوّت‌تر از اینان بودند و در هر دیار راه جستند. آیا هیچ راه نجاتی یافتند؟

ما بسياري از نسل هاي پيش از آنها را كه نيرومندتر بودند، نابود كرديم. آنها زمين را گشتند؛ آيا راه گريزي يافتند؟

And how many We destroyed before them from (a) generation/century they are stronger than them (in) violent destruction/attack, so they searched/investigated in the countries/lands , is (there) from (an) escape/diversion?

And how many a generation We have destroyed before them, who were stronger in power than them, and (when Our Torment came) they ran for a refuge in the land! Could they find any place of refuge (for them to save themselves from destruction)?

How many a generation We destroyed before them that was stronger in valour than they, then they searched about in the land; was there any asylum?

AND HOW MANY a generation have We destroyed before those [who now deny the truth] [This connects with verses 12-14 above. It should be borne in mind that in ancient Arabic usage the term qarn – here rendered as «generation» – often denotes «a period of time succeeding another»: hence, a «century», or «people of one and the same period» and, finally, a «civilization» in the historical sense of this word. That this last significance is intended here becomes evident from the sequence.] – people of greater might than theirs -: but [when Our chastisement befell them,] they became wanderers on the face of the earth, seeking no more than a place of refuge [Lit., «they wandered searching (naqqabu) in the lands: Is there any place of refuge?» – implying that after the destruction of their civilization they could do no more than strive for bare survival.]

Hoevele geslachten hebben wij vr de bewoners van Mekka verdelgd, die machtiger dan zij in sterkte waren? Trekt daarom door de streken der aarde, en ziet of er eene schuilplaats tegen mijne wraak is.

And how many a generation before them have We destroyed? They were stronger in power, and they had dominated the land. Did they find any sanctuary?

Quante generazioni sterminammo prima di loro, che pure erano più potenti di loro e che inutilmente cercarono, percorrendo le contrade, di sfuggire [al castigo]!

And how many a generation We have destroyed before them, who were stronger in power than them, and (when Our Torment came) they ran for a refuge in the land! Could they find any place of refuge (for them to save themselves from destruction)?

Сколько же Мы истребили до них поколений, которые превосходили их мощью! Они странствовали по земле. Но разве они могли сбежать?

Как много Мы истребили поколений, которые жили до них и были намного сильнее их! Они искали по всей земле убежище, [когда постигло их наказание]. Но какое там убежище?

And how many a generation did We destroy before them who were mightier in prowess than they, so they went about and about in the lands. Is there a place of refuge?

And how many a generation We dest
royed before them, who were mightier than these in prowess so that they overran the lands! Had they any place of refuge (when the judgment came)?

How many a generation have we destroyed before them, mightier than they in prowess! Pass through the land, is there any refuge?

Onlardan önce nice nesilleri helâk ettik ki, vuruş ve tutuşları bunlardan daha zorluydu. Ülkelerde delikler açmışlardı/beldelerde kaçacak delik aradılar/beldeleri boydan boya dolaştılar. Var mı bir kaçacak yer?

How many generations, stronger in might than they have We destroyed before them! They searched the land, could they find any asylum?

(All this is the Law of Requital.) And how many a generation We annihilated before them, of greater might than theirs! But, then they wandered on the face of the earth asking, «Is there a place of refuge?»

Many a generation before them, who were more powerful, we annihilated. They searched the land; did they find an escape?

And how many generations have we destroyed ere the days of these (Meccans), mightier than they in strength! Search ye then the land. Is there any escape?

How many generations have We destroyed before the Meccans, which were more mighty than they in strength? Pass, therefore, through the regions of the earth, and see whether there be any refuge from our vengeance?

And how many a generation, who were mightier than they in prowess, have WE destroyed before them ! But when the punishment came, they went about in the lands, devising plans to escape it. But was there any place of refuge for them ?

Doch wie so manche Völker haben Wir schon vor ihnen vertilgt, die stärker waren als sie an Macht! (Als die Strafe kam) suchten sie rings in den Landen. War da ein Zufluchtsort?

А сколько и до них Мы поколений погубили, ■ Кто мощью их превосходил! ■ И вот потом, в своих мытарствах по земле, ■ Смогли ль они найти себе упокоенье?

Күпме кешеләрне һәлак иттек элекке заманнарда, ул заман кәферләре хәзерге кәферләрдән катырак куәтле иделәр, үлемнән котылырга юл эзләп шәһәрләрдә төрле чаралар күрделәр, Аллаһ тәкъдиреннән котылучы булырмы?

اور ہم نے ان سے پہلے کئی اُمتیں ہلاک کر ڈالیں۔ وہ ان سے قوت میں کہیں بڑھ کر تھے وہ شہروں میں گشت کرنے لگے۔ کیا کہیں بھاگنے کی جگہ ہے؟

اور ہم نے اُن (کفار و مشرکینِ مکہّ) سے پہلے کتنی ہی اُمتوں کو ہلاک کر دیا جو طاقت و قوّت میں ان سے کہیں بڑھ کر تھیں، چنانچہ انہوں نے (دنیا کے) شہروں کو چھان مارا تھا کہ کہیں (موت یا عذاب سے) بھاگ جانے کی کوئی جگہ ہو،
