إِذْ أَبَقَ إِلَى الْفُلْكِ الْمَشْحُونِ

إذ أبق إلى الفلك المشحون

Ith abaqa ila alfulki almashhooni

چون به آن کشتي پر از مردم گريخت ،

آنگاه كه به سوى كشتى گرانبار گريخت.

هنگامى كه (آثار عذاب خدا را مشاهده كرد، بدون اجازه خدا، محل مأموريت خود را ترك كرد و) بداخل كشتى پر جمعيت فرار نمود.

[یاد کن] هنگامی را که به سوی آن کشتی پر [از جمعیت و بار] گریخت،

(ياد كن) آنگه كه وى گريخت بسوى كشتى كه پر از مردم و متاع بود

آنگاه كه به سوى كشتى پر، بگريخت!

هنگامى كه به آن كشتى انباشته گريخت،

[ياد كن‏] آن گاه را كه به سوى كشتى گرانبار بگريخت.

چون گريخت بسوى كشتى پر كرده شده

چون به كشتى گرانبار گريخت

به خاطر بیاور زمانی را که به سوی کشتی پر (از جمعیّت و بار) فرار کرد.

آنگاه كه به آن كشتى پُر و گرانبار- آكنده از مردم و كالا- گريخت.

چون گريخت بسوى كشتى پر كرده شده

گاهى كه گريخت بسوى كشتى آكنده

آن گاه که به کشتی پر جمعیتی گریخت (زیرا به قومش وعده عذاب داد و آنها از دل توبه و انابه کردند و خدا رفع عذاب کرد. او به دریای روم گریخت تا نزد قوم خجل و شرمنده نرود).

او به کشتي پرباري گريخت.

When he escaped/took shelter to the ship/ships, the full/loaded.

When he ran to the laden ship,

when he ran away to the laden ship

when he fled like a runaway slave onto a laden ship. [I.e., when he abandoned the mission with which he had been entrusted by God (see 21:87, which gives the first part of Jonah’s story), and thus, in the words of the Bible (The Book of Jonah i, 3 and 10), committed the sin of «fleeing from the presence of the Lord». In its primary significance, the infinitive noun ibaq (derived from the verb abaqa) denotes «a slave’s running – away from his master»; and Jonah is spoken of as having «fled like a runaway slave» because – although he was God’s message-bearer – he abandoned his task under the stress of violent anger. The subsequent mention of «the laden ship» alludes to the central, allegorical part of Jonah’s story. The ship ran into a storm and was about to founder; and the mariners «said everyone to his fellow, Come and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us» (The Book of Jonah i, 7) – a procedure to which Jonah agreed.]
