إِنْ هذا إِلاَّ خُلُقُ الأَْوَّلِينَ

إن هذا إلاّ خلق الأوّلين

In hatha illa khuluqu al-awwaleena

اينها جز همان دروغ و نيرنگ پيشينيان نيست

اين جز شيوه پيشينيان نيست.

اين آداب و رسوم پيشينيان ما بوده است.

این [پند و اندرزها و تقسیم امور به حلال و حرام] جز شیوه پیشینیان [که اهل واپس گرایی و خرافات بودند] نیست،

نيست اين (كار كه ما بر آنيم يا آنچه تو مى‏گوئى) مگر عادت پيشينيان

اين جز شيوه پيشينيان نيست.

اين همان روش پيشينيان است

نيست اين [زندگى و مردن‏] مگر رسم [و سنّت طبيعت در ميان‏] پيشينيان.

نيست اين مگر عادت پيشينيان

اين جز شيوه پيشينيان نيست

این همان روش (و افسانه‌های) پیشینیان است!

اين جز فرابافته و دروغ پيشينيان نيست.

نيست اين مگر عادت پيشينيان

نيست اين مگر اين خوى پيشينيان

این (مسأله حیات و موت کار طبیعت و خوی جهان و) سرنوشت همه پیشینیان است.

آن بلاها فقط براي نياكان ما بود.

That truly that (is) except the first’s/beginner’s nature/character.

this is nothing but the habit of the ancients,

This [religion of ours] is none other than that to which our forebears clung, [Lit., «the innate habit of the earlier people (al-awwalin)». The noun khuluq denotes one’s «nature» in the sense of «innate disposition» tabiah) or «moral character» (Taj al-Arus); hence the use of this term to describe «that to which one clings», i.e., one’s «innate habit» or «custom», and, in a specific sense, one’s religion (ibid.).]

Wat gij ons predikt is slechts een verzinsel der ouden.

"This is nothing but an invention by the people of old."

This is naught but a custom of the ancients;

This is but a fable of the men of old,

this is nothing but old folks› fictions, for we shall not be tormented!›

That is nothing but a habit of the ancients,

This has been our life-style for generations.

This which thou preachest is only a device of the ancients;

یہ (اور) کچھ نہیں مگر صرف پہلے لوگوں کی عادات (و اطوار) ہیں (جنہیں ہم چھوڑ نہیں سکتے)،
